Binding My Own Book (Of Fractured Edges)

Binding My Own Book (Of Fractured Edges)

Of Fractured Edges...the last of the first four books. The finale. The start of more. Blah, blah, blah, this is about the physical copy. Each of the previous three I've made custom hand-bound copies for, so Of Fractured Edges was next. OFE's artwork came from a photo I took of tree bark, complete with moss and everything. Then I ran the image through a bunch of color filters to give it that intense black/green hue. All that makes the cover of a hand-bound, artistic copy of the book, with three dimensionality and that sort of 'real aspect', obvious in how to do it. It's not like I'm making an analogy for water, fire, or wind. It's wood. And wood is tangible and exists. The idea of what to do is clear, but the execution...difficult. Wood is a tricky substance to use in projects like this. But I was going to...

Binding My Own Book (Threads that Bind the Tempest)

Binding My Own Book (Threads that Bind the Tempest)

Almost a year ago I started on the process of binding my own books. In 2017, I did How to Stop Wildfire and Harmonic Waves. Due to a variety of reasons, I didn't do any others last year. I waited until 2018. Wanting to get Threads that Bind the Tempest done before its anniversary, I went ahead and did it. Threads that Bind the Tempest was the first and only cover where the art was wholly digital. It was a fractal I generated of yellow and black waves. How best to represent that in the physical form? The clue was in the name. Threads. That was it. I was going to use threads of yarn to make the cover. I picked up two kinds: a thick yellow one and a thin black one. I kept it simple. The process goes much the same as the others. Getting the book printed....

Binding My Own Book (Harmonic Waves)

Binding My Own Book (Harmonic Waves)

When I made my own copy of How to Stop Wildfire about two months ago, I knew I was going to make copies for the rest of the series. Starting with the next book, of course—Harmonic Waves. The cover used for the print/e-copy originally was a painted piece of paper that was supposed to look water-y. I was thinking of doing paints again for the cover for the self-bound book, but I wasn't feeling it. Then the idea came to me: use stones. Like glass-y stone pebbles. I liked the idea so I went off to the store to find something reasonable. I didn't pick up shiny, heavy stones but instead went with aquarium gravel. I picked up this huge bag of it thinking I'd do the entire cover in it. Then I realized that would probably be a bad idea. I had tacky glue, but I was really skeptical...

Binding My Own Book (How to Stop Wildfire)

Binding My Own Book (How to Stop Wildfire)

In my attempt to further own my work, I went down the path to try to figure out how to make custom copies of my books. For the the e-copy, I'm now using iBooks author, which is an overall great success. I been able to attach images, create glossaries, and add floating footnotes. All that has been making the book more personal. Now that's just the electronic version. For the hard copy version, things got a little bit more interesting. I started out looking at local printing and binding shops. Basically artisan makers of custom books for businesses or even personally use. I learned a great deal by going to the stores and speaking with the owners. There were things I never knew about printing and binding that I learned by speaking with the few businesses that still did it in an artisan fashion. I was highly intrigued as a...
